Starting in 2018, Audi will gradually introduce piloted driving functions such as Parking Pilot, Garage Pilot and Traffic Jam Pilot into series production. For example, the traffic jam pilot will take over the driving task on highways and roads with structural separation at speeds of up to 60 km/h. The system is activated by a button on the center console. A button on the center console activates the system. The congestion pilot then manages starting, accelerating, steering and braking.
Space full
The luxury sedan comes in a 5.17 meter long standard version or as the A8 L with a 13 centimeter longer wheelbase. Compared with the predecessor model, it has increased significantly in length in both body variants. In addition, rear passengers can control many functions such as the ambient lighting, reading lights and seat massage via their own control unit.
Wide range of engines
The new A8 rolls onto the Swiss market with V6 turbo engines, a 3.0 TDI and a 3.0 TFSI. The diesel produces 210 kW/286 hp, the gasoline engine 250 kW/340 hp. Two eight-cylinder engines - a 4.0 TDI with 320 kW/435 hp and a 4.0 TFSI with 338 kW/460 hp - will follow a little later. The top engine is the W12 with 6.0 liter displacement. All five units work together with a belt-driven starter generator (RSG), which is the heart of the 48-volt electrical system. This mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) technology enables the vehicle to "sail" with the engine switched off, including a convenient restart.
Plugin planned
The A8 L e-tron quattro with a plug-in hybrid drive will follow at a later date: Its 3.0 TFSI and the e-machine come to 330 kW/449 hp system output and 700 Nm system torque. The lithium-ion battery stores electricity for around 50 kilometers of purely electric driving. Optionally, it can be charged via Audi Wireless Charging: A floor plate in the garage at home inductively transmits the current with 3.6 kW power to a receiver coil in the car.
Start in autumn
The new Audi A8 and A8 L will be built at the Neckarsulm site in Germany and will be launched on the Swiss market in late fall 2017. The base price for the luxury class vehicle is CHF 111,800, the A8 L starts at CHF 119,000.
