In 1976, no one at VW had any idea that the Golf GTI would become one of the world's most successful compact cars. Instead of the 5,000 units planned, more than 2.2 million were sold by the end of June 2021, 139,033 of them in Switzerland.
VW is now celebrating the GTI's 45th birthday with the Clubsport 45 anniversary model (center gallery). The exclusive special model with a 300-hp turbocharged engine could become a collector's car even as a new model.
In Switzerland, it all started with 110 hp
Golf GTI number one came with 1.6-liter fuel-injected engine and 110 hp. Premiere in 1975 at the IAA in Frankfurt, from July 1976 at Swiss dealers, 182 km/h fast, with black wheel arch extensions, black framed rear window, red framed radiator grille, sports seats with check pattern and a golf ball on the gearshift.
From 1984 to the present day, the GTI versions of the best-selling Volkswagen came in seven further generations with increasingly powerful powertrains. The best-selling model was the GTI II, of which almost 44,000 units were sold between 1984 and 1991.
Golf GTI Clubsport 45-Edition with Race package
The new Clubsport 45 edition impresses with individualized equipment. Particularly striking is the black-painted roof with black roof-edge spoiler as a tribute to Generation One.
Thanks to the standard Race package, the equipment also includes the high-gloss black 19-inch alloy wheels with a narrow paint stripe on the rim in Tornado red. Also part of the Race package is the Akrapovič sports exhaust system, the number 45 as an extension of the lettering on the tailgate.
The Golf GTI Clubsport 45 anniversary model is available from 54,200 Swiss francs.
