Volkswagen: Multivan also coming as an eHybrid
SUCCESSOR It is a master of transformation. Even the first-generation Multivan, launched in 1985, scored points with this concept. Probably the biggest news for the next generation of the van is the powertrain. For the first time, the Multivan gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Called eHybrid, it combines a 1.4-liter TSI engine with an 85-kW electric motor for a total output of 218 hp.
If the part-time Stromer is not right for you, VW will continue to offer pure combustion engines. At market launch, there is a choice between a turbocharged 1.5-liter TSI engine with 136 hp and a more powerful 2.0-liter TSI engine with turbocharging and 204 hp. Diesels are not planned for the time being
Next evolutionary stage of the popular van
Two months ago, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles unveiled the next evolutionary stage of the cult van: the new Multivan with maximum variability. It comes with the most variable interior system that a Bulli has ever had.
Nothing remained as it was. And yet everything feels the way it should in a Multivan: High seating position in the front. Up to five individual seats in the rear that can be moved and removed. On request, the second row of seats can be rotated by 180 degrees, allowing the rear seats to be arranged vis-à-vis each other, which is typical of the Multivan.
More variable storage space due to individual seats
Albert Kirzinger, Head of Design Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles: "It's super practical. And a car is practical when it can be used flexibly. To this end, we have developed a new seating system to accommodate sports equipment, mountain bikes or your surfboard in the spacious interior. With these seats, anything is possible in the new Multivan."
In the future, there will only be individual seats - the continuous rear bench in the third row of seats has been abolished. At the same time, the new individual seats in the second and third rows have become much lighter.
They can now be moved and easily removed and installed in just a few steps. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has also redeveloped the rail system. It is now continuous from the rear to the second row of seats.
Multifunction table can be used as a center console
The table in the new Multivan can now be moved and arranged variably in the rear thanks to a new rail system. And that's not all: since the corresponding rails extend forward between the driver's and front passenger's seats, it can also be used as a center console in the first row of seats. This has never been seen before in a Multivan.
Honored at renowned design competition
Every year, the Red Dot Award jury honors the best products of the year. The reinterpretation of the iconic Bulli won the coveted award in the automobiles and motorcycles category. The Red Dot Award is one of the world's most prestigious design competitions.
This year, companies from 60 nations submitted more than 7800 products for evaluation. The jury of 50 international experts judged, among other things, the degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, durability, ecological compatibility, quality, and symbolic and emotional content.
