On March 29, 1974, production officially started at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. Nobody could have guessed at the time that this was the start of a success story. Since the start of production 45 years ago, a new Golf has been ordered somewhere in the world every 41 seconds of every day without interruption.
659,304 vehicles in 45 years
In July 1974, the first Golf models with 70 hp rolled into Swiss showrooms. The weaker engine variant with 50 hp followed a month later. A further six months later, 3875 vehicles were on Swiss roads. Sales increased steadily each year until the record year of 1979 with 22,140 sales.
Edition 45 with attractive customer benefits
With slight fluctuations, this sales success continued for decades. Even if the Golf seems to have lost its position as the undisputed favorite of Mr. and Mrs. Swiss, the current sales figures are still very impressive. At the end of May 2019, the Golf was in third place behind the Tiguan in the Swiss new car statistics.
To mark the anniversary, VW Switzerland is offering the limited special edition Golf "Edition 45" with a customer benefit of over 10,000 francs.
