CLEAN ELECTRIC After its first presentation at the 2018 Paris Auto Salon, Vietnamese automaker Vinfast is now set to take off with its appearance at the Los Angeles International Auto Show (Nov. 19-28) in the United States.

The VF e36 is to compete in the e-segment against models from competitors BMW and Audi.

Vinfast, a company of the conglomerate Vingroup, will unveil two battery-electric SUVs: the VF e35 and the VF e36. The Vietnamese are using their world premiere as a market launch in North America. Europe is to follow in 2022.

The e36 turns out larger and can formally compete with a BMW iX or an Audi e-tron.

Complete equipment for both models
The VF e35 (gallery) in the D segment and the VF e36 in the E segment feature driver assistance systems such as lane departure warning, collision warning, driver monitoring and a fully automatic parking assistant with parking function.

Also available in both models is an infotainment system with voice control for vehicle functions and a virtual assistant for services.

Competition for Mercedes, Audi and BMW
Both styled as SUVs according to popular taste, the e35 is intended to compete in the upper mid-range against models like the Mercedes EQC or the Audi Q4 E-Tron. The e36 is significantly larger and can at least formally compete with a BMW iX or an Audi E-Tron.

Former Opel boss at the helm
Vinfast was founded in 2017. The private company operates a factory in Haiphong, Vietnam, with a capacity of 250,000 cars and 500,000 electric scooters per year.

Although the Vietnamese say they only have a small rented office in Frankfurt so far and have yet to find a location for their first showroom, the head of the new brand already knows his way around here: The company is headed by former Opel board member Michael Lohscheller.
