VW GOLF Switzerland's best-selling car has been given a makeover. Externally, there are LED headlights and taillights as well as touch-ups to the front and rear. On average, a new Golf rolls off the production line every 40 seconds, usually individually configured and produced to order. The latest generation is now in the starting blocks. Advance sales have already started in Switzerland. The first examples of the 2017 model year - as hatchback and Variant models - are rolling out to their owners these days. They will receive a Golf with modern engines, a sharpened design, clever assistance systems, a new generation of infotainment systems and enhanced equipment.
The most important innovations at a glance:
- More intuitive: infotainment system "Discover Pro" with gesture control.
- Larger and more sophisticated: Infotainment systems were redesigned and given larger touchscreens throughout.
- Guide & Inform" online services and new Car-Net services "Security & Service" for the Golf.
- Partially automated: thanks to the new traffic jam assistant, the Golf drives through stop-and-go traffic partially autonomously at up to 60 km/h.
- More efficient: New 1.5 TSI gasoline engine (96 kW and 110 kW) for the Golf and Golf Variant.
- More powerful: New Golf GTI (from CHF 38,150.-) now with 169 kW / 230 hp (+10 hp); 180 kW / 245 hp for the GTI Performance.
- More economical: Newly developed 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG) reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.3 l/100 km.
- Sharper: New bumpers, new grille, and new and standard full-LED taillights.
- More radiant: New LED headlights replace all xenon headlights in the 2017 model year Golf and Golf Variant (standard on the GTI and R lines).
- More extensive: standard equipment of the basic model now includes new infotainment system "Composition Colour".
Keyword "Smart Home": From now on, it will be possible to control via "MirrorLink" and the new app "Door Bird" open the front door online from a moving car, for example for a family member, tradesman or parcel delivery person (provided the house is also equipped accordingly). The driver can see who is ringing the doorbell online on the touch screen. The update also brings new assistance systems to the compact class: technologies such as the city emergency braking function with new pedestrian detection (Front Assist), the new Traffic Jam Assist (partially automated driving up to 60 km/h) and Emergency Assist, which is also new in this segment, improve safety.
The customization options of the new displays may well overwhelm some drivers without careful instruction. However, the variety of information that can be displayed as desired and the razor-sharp resolution of the displays are convincing and set standards in this class.
The digitalization is flanked by efficient engines. Even the new basic gasoline engine - the turbo direct-injection 1.0 TSI with 63 kW / 85 hp - excels with fuel consumption of just 4.8 l/100 km (Trendline from CHF 21,450). The Golf will also see the debut of the new "1.5 TSI Evo" turbo gasoline engine - a further developed four-cylinder turbo with 110 kW / 150 hp and variable cylinder deactivation (ACT) - price still unknown. This will be followed shortly afterwards by a BlueMotion version with 96 kW / 130 hp. All Golf models also feature BlueMotion Technologies - a stop-start system and a mode for storing braking energy (recuperation).
The new Golf will be delivered to customers in Switzerland from mid-March 2017 in the Trendline, Comfortline and Highline equipment lines, as well as the TGI, GTI, GTD, R and R-Line model variants. The Golf versions Alltrack, GTE and e-Golf can only be configured and ordered from February. These models are expected to be delivered from May 2017.
