Toyota: Hybrid is fun with the Yaris 🎥
SMALL CAR The Toyota Yaris has long been the only hybrid in the small car class to lead the field when it comes to fuel efficiency. In the new model year, the Japanese car also has a sporty look. The Japanese car reaches 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds and reaches speeds of up to 175 km/h. The Yaris is a few millimeters shorter than its predecessor. A few millimeters shorter, but a few [...]
The Japanese car reaches 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds and speeds up to 175 km/h.
A few millimeters shorter, but a few centimeters wider and flatter than its predecessor - the 3.94-meter-long compact car now has really tight proportions with short overhangs and a longer wheelbase.
In addition, a heavily revised front end with a black radiator grille, from which a wide, black plastic bar arches, and flanking fog lamp openings, which appear like intake holes, look down on the asphalt.
The rear view with roof spoiler, the wide black trim connecting the taillights and the bumper shaped as a diffuser are the sporty calling card of the Yaris.
Value claim and solid workmanship
At first glance, the interior with its underfoamed consoles, soft surfaces and fabric upholstery on the dashboard and door trims suggests a high-quality claim. The overall workmanship is rock solid.
The cockpit and controls seem unusually sober and businesslike for a compact car in general and Japanese in particular.
Airbag between driver and passenger
Always standard are distance radar, lane departure, lane change and lane tracking assist, traffic sign and drowsiness detection, turn and emergency brake assist that detects pedestrians day and night, and emergency steering assist.
In addition, eight airbags, including one between the driver and front passenger for the first time, help to achieve the stricter specifications in the Euro NCAP crash test in the future.
In Switzerland, the Active, Comfort, Trend, Style, Premium and Premiere Edition trim levels are offered.
Infotainment and connectivity
Here, the customer has to go up a few equipment levels as required and thereby dig deeper into his pocket. The basic model offers an analog 4.2-inch color display.
A multimedia system with seven-inch touchscreen and smartphone integration can be found in the "Comfort" trim. And an eight-inch monitor with navigation system is provided in the "Style" and above. A ten-inch head-up display projects speed, driving and navi information into the windshield in this model.
Drives from 72 to 125 hp power
The Yaris starts with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder base gasoline engine with 72 or 125 hp. Another three-cylinder gasoline engine with 1.5-liter displacement and 116 hp - always coupled with the continuously variable Multidrive S automatic transmission - is installed in the hybrid versions.
Average consumption under four liters
The gasoline-electric hybrid has been redesigned from the ground up. Instead of a four-cylinder engine, a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with 92 hp now does the main driving work. It is flanked by a 59 kW (80 hp) electric motor, resulting in a system output of 116 hp (85 kW). According to the factory, the hybrid's fuel consumption averages less than four liters.
Yelp of the speed is a thing of the past
One surprise is the continuously variable automatic transmission, which the engineers have tuned so that there is neither a yelp of revs nor the infamous rubber band effect during acceleration.
With its smooth as well as fast interplay, the system thus offers something like driving pleasure.
Optimum safety and driving pleasure
The fourth generation of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid is convincing all along the line. The small car wears significantly sportier shapes and proportions, offers unrivaled safety ex works and the improved hybrid drive is really fun to drive.
Prices start at 17,900 Swiss francs (1.0 liter Active version, manual five-speed transmission, gasoline engine, 72 hp). Hybrid fun is available from 23,900 Swiss francs (1.5 liter Active, e-Multidrive, gasoline engine, 116 hp).
All models have front-wheel drive.
