Toyota: The Prius IV is now available from 34,500 Swiss francs

When Toyota launched the first Prius in 1997, the hybrid was still considered an extravagant type of drive. Today, it is commonplace, but even so, the fourth generation of the Prius is still a very special vehicle - and surprisingly much more affordable than before. Size: With the same wheelbase, the Toyota Prius is now six centimeters longer, but at four and a half meters it is still very compact.

While the first Prius, which was also available here from 2000, cost over 43,000 francs, the price for Generation 3 from 2009 was already 53,000 francs. But surprisingly, the price list for the fourth edition, which will be available from the Geneva Motor Show (March 3 to 13 at Palexpo), starts at 34,500 francs for the well-equipped Sol and 36,900 francs for the luxurious Sol Premium. It pays off that many Prius components are also produced in large numbers for other Toyota Hyprid models.

Less power and also less consumption
The 1.8-liter engine with Atkinson cycle has been optimized, and its efficiency of 40 percent is unique. System output has been reduced to 122 hp, standard consumption to three liters per 100 kilometers and CO2 emissions to 70 g/km. The new TNGA platform allows a two-and-a-half centimeter lower center of gravity and a two centimeter reduction in overall height. The lowered hood, large window areas and the additional window between the taillights allow decent all-round visibility. The seats provide good support, and there is no lack of legroom or headroom in the rear either. The 502-liter cargo area can be expanded asymmetrically and then offers an almost smooth surface with a low loading sill.

The gasoline engine always runs in the optimum range
The driver selects Eco, Normal and Sport modes or pure e-drive with a charged battery and up to 110 km/h. The continuously variable transmission ensures that the gasoline engine always runs in the optimum range - with somewhat unusual background noise. The steering and suspension are designed for comfort. The result is a relaxed, restrained driving experience - very much in the spirit of the Prius pioneers.
