Toyota: C-HR now purrs with more power 🎥

CARE IN DETAIL When the Toyota C-HR rolled onto the market around three years ago, the "Coupé High Rider", as the combination of letters resolves, surprised above all with its polarizing design. The new 2.0-liter hybrid engine gives the Toyota C-HR crossover noticeably more driving dynamics.

Obviously, however, the European creative department had met the taste of the clientele. Because already in its first year of production, 120,000 units rolled onto the roads of Europe, capturing a market share of ten percent in the segment.

Changes under the hood
Now Toyota has given the C-HR a subtle model update, revising the front and rear end without the compact crossover losing its character.

The model's technical upgrades are more significant than the cosmetic touch-ups to the exterior (including the latest generation of LED technology).

C-HR
Behind the extroverted rear of the Toyota C-HR hides a large trunk.

Combustion engine and electric motor
In addition to the 1.2-liter turbo and the 1.8-liter hybrid, a 2.0-liter hybrid engine now brings additional dynamism to the C-HR. The combination of combustion engine and electric motor achieves a system output of 184 hp (135 kW) and at the same time a best-in-class performance/efficiency ratio.

C-HR
The front and rear of the C-HR have been optimized to ensure that the Japanese car retains its character.

Hybrid technology saves fuel
The new drive system does not turn the crossover into a sports car, but it does show that a sustainable engine does not have to mean sacrifice. The hybrid technology does not use any fuel and only consumes around five liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers.

Toyota states a consumption of 5.3 liters, which is also achieved in everyday use. Compared to the 1.8-liter hybrid version (90 kW / 122 hp system output), the two-liter requires only ten percent more fuel despite 50 percent additional power.

Driving dynamics with more thrust
On the road, the electric motor provides an additional portion of thrust, so that the C-HR allows a thoroughly dynamic driving style when needed and spontaneously calls up the power. Gone are the days when acceleration in hybrid models was mainly noticeable acoustically. The power pack works discreetly and calls up the power without interruption.

Electric drive half in use
As with all Toyota hybrid models, the electric motor plays the main role in most driving situations. When driving in the city and on country roads, the share of electric drive is between 50 and 60 percent, and even on the highway, the electric motor takes over around 40 percent of the drive power, as the display in the cockpit reveals.

C-HR
The interior of the C-HR now looks much more sophisticated than that of its predecessor.

Interior is now more homely
The interior has been redesigned and looks much more livable than before. This is mainly due to the higher-quality materials, which give the C-HR a premium feel. Above all, the new seats with their very good lateral support add to the character of comfort.

Despite its extroverted design, all control units are clearly arranged and can be operated conveniently. Less clear is the view to the rear - here the rearview camera becomes an indispensable visual pathfinder.

Connectivity and infotainment
As part of the model update, Toyota's digital specialists also gave the C-HR a refresh in the connectivity and infotainment departments. Among other things, Apple Carplay and Android Auto are on board, and the automatic emergency call E-Call is activated via the DCM onboard connection, as is the regular updating of the map material.

Gasoline engine available with all-wheel drive
Prices start at 27,900 francs (1.2 Comfort), the 1.8 Comfort is available from 33,000 francs and the 2.0 Trend starts at 36,500 francs. The only model in the range with all-wheel drive is the gasoline-powered 1.2 Trend, which is priced from 34,200 francs.
