Lightweight sports coupes with standard powertrains have become rare in recent years. With this concept, however, the twin pair Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86 has found loyal customers.
New and proven
To keep the fire burning, the Japanese are now holding out the prospect of a new development. The successor model Subaru BRZ relies on the proven drive concept, but gets a more powerful engine.
The 2.4-liter boxer engine of the BRZ MY 2022, which was unveiled in California a few days ago, still operates without a turbocharger and delivers a maximum torque of 250 Nm and a peak output of 230 hp at 7000 rpm.
High-performance tires and stiffer body
The BRZ is said to have retained its low weight, low center of gravity and excellent handling as typical features.
The new body of the 2+2-seater has become significantly more torsionally stiff. With the optional high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires in the 215/40 R18 dimension, it will cut a decidedly fine figure on public roads and on the race track.
Transmission alternatives include a 6-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. Of course, several driving modes can be selected in the BRZ.
For use on the racetrack, five gradations of the vehicle stability control (VSC) are available.
Pronounced sportiness and comfort
The interior of the 4.26-meter-long new model offers good comfort despite the vehicle's pronounced sportiness. In addition to the main displays, the instrument cluster features a variable display with various driving information and the touchscreen of the Subaru Starlink multimedia system with smartphone connection. Also included are the Eyesight driver assistance system and a rearview camera.
Peter Bucher of Subaru Switzerland: "However, nothing has been decided yet regarding a launch in Europe."
