Porsche: For the anniversary there is the 357 study 🎥

PITY, ONLY A VISION To mark the 75th birthday of its first model, the 356, Porsche is giving itself a present and creating an unusual homage to sports cars of yesterday and tomorrow with the Vision 357.

The Stuttgart-based manufacturer is honoring the premiere of the 356 No. 1 Roadster in the summer of 1948 with a new design study. This Vision 357, which has now been unveiled, resumes the lines of the legendary two-seater as a showpiece. On June 8, the No. 1 was the first car to receive general operating approval under the Porsche name, initially as a roadster, and then went into large-scale production as a coupe.

The first sketches for the 357 study were made in the spring of 2022.

Importance of the design DNA of the brand

Chief Designer Michael Mauer, Head of Style Porsche: "With the Porsche Vision 357, we have created a very special birthday present that underscores the importance of our design DNA based on the 356. The study is an attempt to coherently combine the past, present and future. The proportions may be reminiscent of the historical model, details visualize the view into the future."

Platform is the 718 Cayman GT4 RS

The technical platform of the 357 is the 500-hp Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS, whose proportions and windshield are reminiscent of the first production Porsche. Early 356 Porsche models had a two-piece windshield with a center bar. This was replaced by a one-piece windshield with a central crease starting with the 1952 model year.

Memories of the historic 356

The grille pattern at the rear, which incorporates the third brake light, is reminiscent of the historic Porsche 356. There are also parallels in the wheel design and the gray two-tone paint finish. Instead of classic exterior mirrors, the study is equipped with cameras on the roof edge. The exhaust trim visible at the rear is made of bluish titanium and the inside of the tailpipes is made of ceramic.

Study offers everything of a successful model

The Vision 357 may look sharper, be stronger, go faster and be a better value. But in one respect, the original is vastly superior: While the study exists only once for now, some 78,000 examples of the 356 were built between 1948 and 1965. The study has everything a successful model needs. Proven technology, a good story and appealing design. The Porsche 357 has all of this. So perhaps it will at least be enough for a small series. It would certainly be sold out by now.
