Piëch: The battery is half the car
IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS The upcoming Swiss electric sports car Piëch GT will be launched with a particularly efficient battery pack. Cooperation partner Elring Klinger is supplying the innovative battery system.
Development of the Piëch GT electric sports car is progressing according to plan. The company has now agreed to cooperate with Elring Klinger, a key systems partner to the automotive industry for lightweight solutions, electromobility and engineering services, on the development and production of the battery system.
Together with its other development partner Hofer Powertrain, the young Swiss group of companies can build on the expertise of two renowned suppliers.
New battery technology
The new pouch cells, which were first supplied by Chinese partners and are now being developed and produced in Germany, have a special structure that is said to enable peak values to be achieved in terms of thermal behavior, charging speed and recuperation capability. Thanks to new cell chemistry, the Piëch GT's electricity storage system is said to be able to be charged from 20 to 80 percent in just eight minutes using a 350-kW fast charger.
Company founders Toni Piëch - son of former VW boss Ferdinand Piëch - and Rea Stark Rajcic formulated an ambitious development goal a good three years ago at the GT's world premiere at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
Toni Piëch: "The new Piëch GT should convincingly transport the genes of a classic sports car into the electric age."
Outstanding driving performance expected
Now Piëch Engineering AG has achieved the next important milestone with its new partnership in battery development.
Head of Development Klaus Schmidt: "Thanks to the cooperation with Elring Klinger, we have the cells, which originally came from China, closer to Piëch Engineering and can also support them more closely with regard to the further development as well as availability of the charging stations."
Weighing 1800 kilograms, the two-seater Piëch GT accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds thanks to its 450 kW powertrain. The developers state a maximum range of 500 WLTP kilometers.
