The compact sixth-generation Opel Astra is also easy to control when cornering at speed.
The creatives call the new brand face "Opel Vizor" (visor), which they showed for the first time with the Mokka. Thanks to the design, the Astra now looks wider and more dynamic than its predecessor, although the latest generation of the compact model has only grown slightly in terms of dimensions.
Lighting technology comes from the Insignia flagship
The front section is dominated by the slim Intelli-Lux LED headlights and the front camera. The lighting technology was taken from the Opel flagship Insignia and uses 168 LED elements to bring light into the darkness.
Within a few milliseconds, the headlights adapt to the respective traffic situation and thus avoid dazzling oncoming vehicles.
Assistance systems from higher segments
The developers also reached into the parts shelf for the other assistance systems and gave the Astra elements that were previously reserved for higher segments.
This includes the automatic speed assistant, which adapts to the speed of the vehicle in front and brakes to a standstill. The version with an eight-speed automatic transmission also starts up again automatically after stopping.
Head-up display and traffic sign recognition
The Astra comes to customers with a six-speed gearbox as standard. Also on board (for an extra charge) are a large head-up display and advanced traffic sign recognition. Five cameras are supported by five radar sensors.
Cameras and sensors enable the new Intellidrive 2.0 system to drive semi-autonomously. The system adjusts the speed on bends if necessary and enables semi-automatic lane changes.
Plug-in hybrid drive delivers 110 hp or 225 hp
For the first time, the Astra is being launched with a plug-in hybrid drive. There is a choice of two power levels - 110 hp or 225 hp system output. Those responsible are still keeping quiet about fuel consumption figures and electric range.
With a length of 4.37 meters and a width of 1.86 meters, the Astra has remained in the compact model segment. Rear seat passengers in particular benefit from the increased wheelbase of 2.67 meters. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 422 liters.
Dynamic properties with good comfort
During an initial validation drive, the Astra proved to be exceptionally stable and comfortable. Even when cornering at speed, the compact Opel is easy to control, and the chassis - McPherson struts at the front and torsion beam suspension at the rear - is equipped with good comfort values in addition to its dynamic properties.
Seats according to the guidelines of the Healthy Back Campaign
The "Opel Vizor" design language continues in the interior. The fully digital information center with a generously dimensioned screen dispenses with analog displays and can be operated intuitively.
However, simple settings such as the air conditioning can be controlled analogously via a switch panel below the screen. For front-seat occupants, the Opel specialists developed seats with good lateral support that meet the strict guidelines of the German Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR).
