The E-Class is Mercedes' most important model series. The fifth generation is ready and waiting.

With the 180 model in pontoon form and from 1965 with the tail fin models, the "dash eight" from 1974 and the 123 and 124 series, the upper middle class became a bestseller at Daimler.

The new E-Class appeared in 1995 as the 210 series with the characteristic "four-eye face". Twenty years and two generations later, the 213 series was launched, which together with the 238 coupe-cabriolet series now embodies the E-Class. Now the large E family is entering the market with a facelift.

The E 300 sedan drives particularly efficiently with a 2-liter gasoline engine and 48-volt hybrid system.

Modifications in all areas
The numerous modifications to the body, equipment and powertrain include, for example, the central star in the front grille and the hood with powerdomes for the Avantgarde, AMG Line and All-Terrain versions.

The front bumper of the sedans has been redesigned, as have the headlights of the coupé-cabriolet pair.

The interior has also been redesigned: New colors and materials surround the driver and passengers. In addition, a new steering wheel generation is being launched that works with capacitive hands-off recognition. The touch control switches integrated in the steering wheel spokes work in the same way.

The new generation of the MBUX multimedia system offers a generous widescreen look with two large screens. There are four display styles: Modern Classic, Sport, Progressive and Discreet.

Among the important innovations is the steering wheel with a fresh design and capacitive sensor technology.

Sailing with the combustion engine switched off
The electrification of the powertrain is running on three tracks. The mild hybrids operate with an integrated 48 V starter generator that supports the gasoline engine and the diesel where weaknesses exist - i.e. during warm-up and at low load.

With up to 250 Nm and 16 kW of additional power, the EQ Boost models E 200, E 300 and E 450 enable sailing with the combustion engine switched off. Alternatively, seven models are offered with plug-in hybrid systems. These so-called EQ Power vehicles are also available in combination with diesels and gasoline engines.

The system power range of the E 300 e and E 300 models is 320 hp (235 ) and 306 hp (225 kW) (The electric motors provide support with 440 Nm and 90 kW each.

Safe feeling in all situations
The test drive with the E 450 All-Terrain Estate showed just how well the combustion engine and electric motor work together.

With the station wagon in off-road look, it is possible to roll smoothly over country roads on the flat. Transitions from sailing to boosting are only noticeable in the different drive torques, but not in gearshifts.

The all-wheel drive also works extremely discreetly and thus ensures a safe feeling in all driving situations. In terms of price, the E-Class models range from 59,700 (E 200) to 158,500 Swiss francs (AMG E 63 S).
