With protection class VPAM VR10, the new Mercedes-Benz S 680 Guard 4Matic meets the highest ballistic test level for civilian vehicles. It is also particularly resistant to explosive charges. The certification carried out by the Beschussamt Ulm was carried out for the first time with the realistically replicated Biofidel dummy.
The vehicle is the first Guard sedan with all-wheel drive and is powered by the familiar V12 (612 hp, 830 Nm). The S 680 Guard 4Matic will have its world premiere on September 7 at the IAA in Munich.
Shell offers a special protective cell
The integrated protection system (iSS) of the new now reaches an even higher level, because a specific shell of protective elements has been developed for the Guard. The self-supporting protective cell is the core of the iSS.
In addition to the armor, the protection system also includes the adaptation of the chassis, engine and transmission to ensure near-production handling. Thanks to the parallel development process with the high-volume models, the durability of the Guard vehicles also reaches series production level. Finally, the aluminum outer skin provides an inconspicuous appearance only as a design shell.
Tradition with the construction of protective vehicles
Mercedes has been building special protection vehicles since 1928. Many politicians and heads of state have relied on the safety of Mercedes special protection vehicles. From 1965, the company offered numerous models.
In addition to the Mercedes 600 as a sedan and Pullman saloon, these included V8 models of the S-Class in the 1970s and 1980s. In 2016, the company presented the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Guard, the first model to meet the highest protection level for civilian vehicles with resistance class VR102.
