Mercedes-Benz: The T-Class is a car for families 🎥
ENOUGH SPACE Mercedes-Benz is once again occupying the high-roof station wagon segment with a little help from Renault. Unlike the launch of its predecessor, the Citan, the new T-Class has been given a more brand-typical face.
The T-Class is based on the French company's Kangoo. In contrast to the launch of its predecessor, the Citan, the new T-Class has a significantly different and more brand-typical face. Inside, too, it differs significantly from its French doppelganger.
No less than two sliding doors are used for quick entry and exit or flexible loading. Extensive safety equipment and diverse connectivity are intended to bring the T-Class premium comfort in the private family van segment.
Long variant with a third row of seats
The 4.50-meter-long high-roof station wagon comes with a chrome radiator grille and exterior mirror housings and door handles painted in body color as standard. Its proportions are balanced, the lines reduced to a minimum. There are five seats on board, and at 1.86 meters wide and 1.81 meters high there is no shortage of space inside.
Those who need even more volume will have to wait for the long-wheelbase version, which is due to follow in the course of the year. This will also have a third row of seats and a total of seven seats.
As an alternative to the tailgate, both versions can be equipped with a two-part door whose parts can either be locked in a 90-degree position or swung to the side by up to 180 degrees. The trunk can hold up to 520 liters up to the luggage compartment cover.
Avoiding traffic jams with car-to-x communication
Even the base model has extensive standard equipment. These include the MBUX infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration and keyless start function. Also included are a height-adjustable driver's seat, the luggage compartment cover, and LED lights for the interior.
The center armrest is upholstered in Artico imitation leather, while the armrests in the doors are clad in the fine textile structure Neotex, which was recently introduced in Mercedes' electric EQ models.
The T-Class is prepared for the digital services of Mercedes Me Connect; activating them makes remote inquiry of the vehicle status or remote door locking and unlocking possible. Thanks to navigation with Live Traffic Information and Car-to-X communication, traffic jams can be avoided efficiently.
Gasoline from Diesel as required up to 131 hp
Two diesels and two gasoline engines in a total of four output levels are available for the T-Class at market launch. The two diesel engines with four cylinders and a displacement of 1.5 liters deliver 95 hp and 115 hp and 260 and 270 Nm of peak torque. The gasoline engines have a displacement of 1.3 liters and produce either 102 hp or 131 hp. They reach their maximum torque at 200 and 240 Nm.
The engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission, while a dual-clutch transmission with seven speeds is available on request for the diesel and the more powerful gasoline engine. The T-Class can tow trailers weighing up to 1.5 tons, in which case the track-stabilizing Trailer Assist function can also be ticked in the options list.
Pure electric version is in preparation
An electric drive system is in preparation for the T-Class. This variant will be called EQT and will probably make its debut at the end of the year. Mercedes already gave a preview last year with a concept vehicle that attracted attention with its futuristic black panel front grille. This means that there will be a purely electric version in all of the brand's van series.
