The Mercedes-Benz Concept A Sedan can be seen in the flesh at the Shanghai Auto Show currently underway.

The Concept A Sedan show car substantiates the further development of the Mercedes-Benz design language. According to the manufacturer, the upcoming compact class generation marks the departure into an even more consistent implementation of the design language of "sensual clarity".

Compacts boom
Since 2012, over two million compacts have been sold worldwide. In addition to the modern design language, innovations in assistance systems, connectivity and driving pleasure, model diversity is a key success factor: With the A-Class and B-Class, CLA and CLA Shooting Brake, and the SUV crossover GLA, five differently positioned variants are on the starting grid.

Study of a compact premium sedan
The Concept A Sedan (length/width/height: 4,570/1,870/1,462 mm) has the proportions of a dynamic, coupé-like yet compact premium sedan. The classic three-box design with short overhangs, especially at the rear, and the flat "greenhouse" set towards the rear contribute to this. Other sedan features include the relatively upright C-pillar, the large side windows and the high curb.

Light shows
The striking front end radiates self-confidence. The deep, forward-slanting Panamericana grille with vertical chrome inserts and central star as well as the elongated hood with powerdomes make a decisive contribution to this. The grille structure in the lights is coated with a UV coating and illuminated with ultraviolet light. This causes the headlights to "glow" in different colors depending on the light medium - the daytime running lights, for example, white. This unusual lighting technology is also used at the rear: the striking tail light graphic is also designed as a structural sculpture.
