Now the Polo is really a big one
VOLKSWAGEN Small car my ass. Hardly any other car shows as clearly how it can grow over the years as the new Polo. After all, it has grown by a good half a meter after 42 years of production. Even after the first few kilometers, a pleasant perspective opens up: cleanly drawn edges and surfaces, chic materials and impeccable workmanship. Along with the length, the wheelbase has grown by more than nine centimetres and the width by almost seven centimetres. This creates plenty of legroom and freedom of movement, both front and rear. This also benefits the trunk, which has been pumped up by a useful 71 to a generous 351 liters.
Plenty of accessories even from the basic version
The new Polo generation is available in the classic Trendline, Comfortline and Highline equipment versions and has four doors as standard - plus tailgate, of course. The basic Trendline version comes as standard with LED daytime running lights with Coming and Leaving Home function, a speed limiter, DAB+ digital radio, Composition Media radio system including cell phone preparation and the Front Assist area monitoring system with City Emergency Braking function and Pedestrian Monitoring.
Five engines will be available from the start of sales
The price of the new Polo starts at CHF 16,800 (1.0 with 65 PS ). Five engine variants are currently available to order in Switzerland: In addition to the two 1.0-liter gasoline engines with 65 hp and 75 hp, a 1.0-liter TSI with 95 hp and a 1.0 TSI with 115 hp as well as a natural gas variant with 90 hp are also available. All engines are equipped with a stop-start system and recuperation mode as standard. From an output of 95 PS, a combination with a dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) is also possible. In addition, two further petrol engines and two diesels will be available at a later date.
First test with the nippy three-cylinder engine
With the sound of a double Vespa, the lively three-cylinder engine with 95 hp completes every driving maneuver with ease. Whether it's lively lane weaving in the city or brisk gliding across the countryside, the engine is also remarkably quiet thanks to good noise insulation. But it is above all in terms of handling that the new Wolfsburg shows that it has now become a big player. The steering is sensitive and precise, the suspension comfort firm and balanced, the handling almost foolproof. Rarely has a small car seemed so mature and grown-up.
The new Polo is now available to order in Switzerland. The market launch will be at the beginning of November. And if you want to optimize your personal driving pleasure even further, then you should treat yourself to an audio sample in the special "beats" model. It's a real pleasure.
