Hyundai: First photos and video of the Bayon 🎥

GROWTH The market for SUVs barely longer than four meters is growing. Hyundai is therefore also rounding off its range downwards. With a length of 4.18 meters, the new Bayon is positioned below the Kona and is the successor to the i20 Active. The Bayon compact SUV from Hyundai was developed specifically for the demands of European customers

Surprisingly, the Bayon is practically the same length as the Kona, but outstrips the new i20, on which it is based, by around ten centimeters. Unlike the Kona, however, the Bayon is said to offer more interior space.

Basis is the same platform as that of the i20
As a true SUV, the Bayon offers up to 183 millimeters of ground clearance (in combination with 17-inch wheels) - more than most vehicles in the B-segment and even 13 millimeters more than the Hyundai Kona (170 millimeters).

Developed on the same platform as the i20, the Bayon is distinguished by its bold styling, consisting of lines that are out of the ordinary and largely new to the Korean manufacturer itself.

Trapezoidal radiator grille with a sporty touch
At the front, the lights have been distributed on several levels as is typical for Hyundai SUVs, with the main ones shaped like an arrow, while the large trapezoidal radiator grille adds a sporty touch.

The shapes of the rear are also very special. Arrow-shaped LED light clusters also stand out here, but they are connected by a thin strip that runs across the entire width of the tailgate.

Compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
The interior design faithfully follows that of the i20, from which the new Bayon is derived. The dashboard and the arrangement of the various elements on it is the same as its normal sibling.

The dominant feature is the infotainment system screen with a diagonal of 10.25 inches, which ensures wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Next to it is a second screen that functions as an instrument cluster. It has the same width as the multimedia system and features customizable graphics.

The back seat is supposed to be spacious, both for the legs and the head. There is also plenty of space in the trunk. There, 411 liters are available in normal state, which become 1205 liters when the backrests of the second row of seats are folded down.

Byon
The Bayon will be available from Hyundai's sales partners from June 2021. Prices have not yet been set.

Four drives for driving pleasure and maximum efficiency
The Bayon offers a choice of four gasoline powertrains, two of which are combined with Hyundai's 48-volt hybrid technology.

For starters, there is a 1.2-liter MPi four-cylinder with 84 hp and a five-speed manual transmission. Above that are the three-cylinder turbocharged engines of the updated Kappa engine family. The 1.0 T-GDi with 100 hp is available with or without 48-volt hybrid technology, while the 1.0 T-GDi with 120 hp is available exclusively with high-tech technology.

The 1.0 T-GDi without 48-volt technology is offered with a six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

For powertrains with 48-volt hybrid technology, Hyundai also uses the intelligent six-speed manual transmission (6iMT) with electronically controlled clutch in addition to the 7DCT.

The system decouples the engine from the transmission in certain driving situations and depending on engine speed, and goes into a fuel-saving sailing mode as soon as the driver takes his foot off the gas pedal.
