Ferrari: SF90 Stradale with extra power 🎥
BELLA MACCHINA The first Ferrari with front-wheel drive that runs out of breath after just 25 kilometers? Fans of the brand can't really be shocked by that. AutoSprintCH contributor Jürgen Zöllter explains why. Production of the Ferrari SF90 Stradale for the next two years is already sold out. On the contrary! The production of the Ferrari SF90 Stradale of the next two years is already sold out.
On the contrary! You know that the real entertainment program only begins after the silent short crawl in the new Ferrari SF90 Stradale initiated by an electrically driven front axle. And what a program it is...!
Innovative leap into electromobility
Following the Enzo in 2002 and the LaFerrari of 2013, Ferrari is once again bringing a superlative sports car in the form of the SF90 Stradale and is using the innovative leap as a serious step into electromobility.
For the first time, the top model is not powered by a twelve-cylinder engine, but by the optimized V8 biturbo unit from the F154 series familiar from the California T, 488 GTB and F8 Tributo.
Up to 1000 hp is available
Together with three electric motors, two of which drive the front axle exclusively, up to 1000 hp can be provided. They drive the 1570-kilogram racer to breathtaking performance levels. Only in pure E-mode with a driven front axle does the FS90 not win any laurels.
Tachometer from analog world
The heartbeat begins when you reach for the multifunction steering wheel. It is peppered with rotary, rocker, touch-sensitive and scrollable switches, a touchpad for controlling menu functions.
Behind it is a panoramic cockpit with a curved 16-inch screen that only comes to life when you touch the start/stop field at the bottom of the steering wheel. In the center is the huge tachometer, whose graphics we know from the analog Ferrari world.
Perfect interaction of the aggregates
So we put our foot on the brake pedal and touch the start pad a second time: Electric currents flow, we read READY on the display, but we hear nothing. The SF90 starts up electrically when the throttle is lightly depressed, and if you step on it more firmly, the two electric motors on the front axle are assisted by the 4.0-liter V8 unit and integrated electric motor sitting at the back of the neck.
Only now Ferrari driving dynamics, Ferrari sound, Ferrari feeling of life drives up the blood pressure! The interaction of the power units is harmonious and entertaining. The power of the internal combustion engine is provided by a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
But the adrenaline-flooding Ferrari experience only becomes truthful between 4000 and 7500 rpm, when the V8 mid-engine burns gasoline and the human organs burn lots of oxygen.
Up to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds
Catapulting the car from a standstill to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and to 200 km/h in 6.7 seconds saves a visit to the facial surgeon. At least for a few seconds, the force of the acceleration smoothes out facial wrinkles, and the cerebellum responsible for motor control is flooded with blood.
While the electric motor between the combustion engine and transmission boosts up to the top speed of 340 km/h, the two electric motors at the front switch off at 210 km/h. The electric motor in the front of the vehicle is the power source. At speeds above this, no tight corners are taken that would require torque vectoring.
Track stability through true torque vectoring
But it's not just the cumulative maximum output of 1000 hp that impresses. Rather, the lightning-fast response of the powertrain is impressive while the turbochargers are still busy building up pressure.
With two electric motors independently powering both front wheels, the SF90 benefits from unique tracking stability.
Already long list of pre-orders
The price for the first plug-in Ferrari doesn't scare only Ferrari fans, as the long list of pre-orders shows. Launched to mark the 90th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari (SF90) and expected at the end of 2020, the top Ferrari model is not limited to a small series for the first time.
Assetto Fiorano with carbon fiber rear spoiler
It has already been sold out for more than two years, according to reports. Customers have to set aside at least 489,500 francs for it. Another 59,750 francs are due on top for the lighter SF90 Assetto Fiorano variant with a fixed carbon-fiber rear spoiler.
So far, 50 percent of all customers have opted for this model. Perhaps also because it is less well-behaved.
