Wayne Griffiths, Chairman Seat and CEO Cupra, explains the future of the brands.
The Formentor is the first model developed in-house by Seat's Cupra sports brand. The body shape is already characteristic of the new brand.
Although the Formentor is an SUV in its basic form, its low vehicle height and dynamic lines with sharp edges also give it unmistakable sporty traits. That's why Cupra prefers to refer to it as a CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle).
Interior inspires passion
The interior of the five-seater newcomer is also designed to arouse emotions. The sports steering wheel with start and drive program switches and bucket seats with leather upholstery, as well as the infotaiment and connectivity systems with 12-inch touchscreen, raise the pulse before setting off.
At the command of the gas pedal, the heartbeat increases
The heart rate is then raised further by the driving experience, for which the two-liter turbo gasoline engine with 310 hp and the sportily tuned chassis are responsible.
If the Formentor rolls quietly and comfortably through towns and along country roads in the style of a sedan, it immediately becomes a fun vehicle at the command of the gas pedal and with the drive mode selection Sport or Cupra - which means Sport Plus.
Natural and synthetic sounds
A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission delivers finely dosed drive power to all four wheels. Accompanied by restrained natural and synthetic engine sounds, it accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. However, it can always be kept well under control at high speeds, as all important driving dynamics controls and assistance systems are on board as standard.
Drive variants are available as required
In addition to the top model with 310 hp, which is offered for exactly 50,000 Swiss francs, Cupra brings other drive variants into the program. The entry-level model is the Formentor 2.0 TSI with 190 hp, dual-clutch transmission and 4Drive all-wheel drive.
The VZ versions (VZ stands for veloz = fast) include the front-wheel drive VZ 2.0 TSI 245 hp and VZ e-Hybrid 1.4 TSI, also with 245 hp.
Cupra el-Born comes next year
The plug-in hybrid is equipped with a 13 kWh battery. Like the PHEV versions of the Leon and Leon Sportstourer, the hybrid Formentor will be available from early 2021. Prices have not yet been set. The all-electric Cupra el-Born is planned for the second half of 2021.
