With the XT4 crossover, Cadillac is pushing into the mid-size segment, which is in particularly high demand.
In terms of powertrains, Cadillac offers a rather startling surprise for potential customers in Europe. With the BLS model, the diesel engine disappeared from the Americans' range more than ten years ago - and now the XT4 is back with a two-liter self-igniter.
A turbo gasoline engine of the same size with 230 hp and all-wheel drive is to follow before the end of the year. A hybrid version is not planned because work is already underway at the same time on an all-electric model to be called Lyriq (AutoSprintCH reported).
Self-igniter 40 years ago in the Seville
Insiders know that some 40 years ago the Cadillac Seville was powered by a 5.7-liter V8 compression ignition engine.
Today, the four-cylinder engine, which is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, needs less than half the volume to generate 174 hp of power. This power is already available from 1500 rpm, so pressure on the accelerator pedal is immediately transformed into pressure in the rear.
Design with striking light units
A select young design team drew the shell, and contrary to the usual approach, from the rear to the front of the car. Nevertheless, the front end is decidedly beefy and striking, with the light units protruding far into the fenders.
The grille is sparingly edged with chrome, while the black front apron, side sills and wheel arches support the SUV look.
Tailgate is electrically operated
The taillights are L-shaped and extend up to the roof-edge spoiler, and several joints and edges visually stretch the rear end.
The basic version of the XT4 already has an electrically operated tailgate, the opening angle of which can be regulated by a rotary knob, and a rearview camera - features that other manufacturers charge for as an option.
Wide angle camera on roof edge spoiler
Also supplied ex works is the electronic interior mirror, which feeds images from a second wide-angle camera - mounted on the roof edge spoiler - into the driver's or front passenger's field of vision.
Not only when rear-seat passengers or cargo restrict visibility, but also in cloudy weather, the camera is a help.
Touchscreen or rotary pushbutton
The main monitor is recessed in the center of the leather-covered dashboard, slightly tilted in the direction of travel. This allows information to be overlooked.
Representatives of the smartphone generation will probably use the touchscreen functions more often, but the safer handling via rotary-push dial is also possible. You can see more details in the gallery.
With an additional head-up display, heated front and rear seats, as well as 3D navigation and 20-inch aluminum wheels, the self-igniter Launch Edition (from 50,950 Swiss francs) will entice customers at the Swiss market launch from October 10, 2020.
The basic Luxury version is available as a diesel or gasoline engine from 42,300 Swiss francs. The Sport variant is a new addition to the range, starting at 50,400 Swiss francs.
