BMW: First drive with the current X7 🎥
BORN IN THE USA The BMW X7 is one of those cars you don't have to understand until you've driven it once. Now it's time for a comprehensive product upgrade that BMW is even talking about a new model.
270,000 units of the BMW X7 have rolled off the production line at the U.S. plant in Spartanburg so far: a proud result for such a large and high-priced car. Almost half of the X7 production has remained in the USA, another 21 percent went to China, and seven percent are still sold in Korea.
Countries where SUV drivers are regularly criticized by politicians and activists receive only small numbers. This is a shame, because the BMW X7 is a car with amazing qualities.
Gasoline and diesel from 380 to 530 hp
For the powertrain, there is a choice of a 380-hp 3-liter inline-six (40i), a 530-hp 4.4-liter V8 (M60i) and a 352-hp 3-liter inline-six diesel (40d).
It is interesting to note that diesel engines account for 14 percent of sales. Conversely, this means that the diesel engine is literally being snatched out of sellers' hands wherever it is on offer.
Spurts from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds
We have driven both gasoline engines so far. The six-cylinder consumes 9.6 liters per 100 kilometers in the cycle, sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, and reaches 250 km/h. If you want to experience real driving fun, you should choose the M60i right away. Its eight-cylinder engine catapults the 2.6-ton X7 from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, with the speed limit set at 250 km/h.
All X7 models feature 48-volt mild hybridization. The 8-speed transmission shifts lightning fast and also meets sporty requirements. All-wheel drive is part of the X7. We find it remarkable that BMW still does not offer a plug-in hybrid in the X7.
Plenty of space even in the third row
The interior offers plenty of space, even the third row of seats is comfortable. A dashboard that uses the new OS8 electronics architecture stretches out in front of the driver.
The slightly curved screen, which has also found its way into many other BMW models, looks high-quality and modern; the angular dials for speed and rpm take some getting used to. The trunk volume varies between 300 and 2120 liters.
BMW has streamlined and tightened up the driving modes. A real step backwards, however, is the omission of the central switch, which allowed the sometimes enervating lane departure warning system to be switched off directly.
Prices for the base model start at 119,900 Swiss francs.
