Alternative drives: station wagons still lacking
SWISS MARKET The range of electric cars has increased. With a consumption of less than 20 kWh per 100 kilometers, there are now Honda e, e-Niro and e-Soul from Kia, Opel Corsa-e and e-208 and e-2008 from Peugeot. The Auto-Umweltliste of the Verkehrs-Club der Schweiz VCS evaluates new passenger cars in terms of their environmental impact and shows which models [...]
The Auto Environmental List of the Swiss Transport Club VCS evaluates new passenger cars in terms of their environmental impact and shows which models are least harmful to the environment.
The top-rated models are equipped with an alternative drive: Electric, gas or (mild) hybrid. There is still a station wagon missing.
Natural gas models from Skoda and Audi
With the growing supply of e-cars, e-combis would also be desirable because of their practical body shape. Anyone looking for a station wagon with a fossil-free drive system still has to opt for a gas-powered model - and fill up with 100 percent biogas.
There are three new gas-powered models to choose from: The Skoda Scala G-Tec and Audi A4 Avant g-tron are two station wagons, along with the Skoda Kamiq G-Tec SUV.
In addition to pure e-cars, gas-powered models can also be driven exclusively with renewable energy.
Driving purely electrically at low speeds
In the case of plug-in hybrids, use and driving behavior are decisive for environmental impact. A disadvantage is also the weight due to the double motorization.
Among the models with gasoline or diesel engines, some are now available as hybrid or mild hybrid variants (Honda Jazz 1.5 i-MMD, Suzuki Swift 1.2 Hybrid, Suzuki Ignis 1.2 Hybrid).
In mild hybrids, the battery and electric motor are small in size. They serve to increase efficiency, but do not allow driving without an internal combustion engine. Hybrid cars, on the other hand, can drive purely electrically at low speeds.
First electric station wagon coming in 2022
CO2 emissions from new cars must fall in order not to further fuel the climate, and quickly. As stricter new car targets will apply to vehicle importers from 2020, more efficient models have been announced for this year.
Interested parties will still have to wait for an e-wagon: Volkswagen has not announced such a vehicle until 2022.
