During the lockdown in the spring, the industry had feared the worst. But things got better: as soon as the sales outlets reopened, there was a run on everything with two wheels and an engine.
The losses had already been made up by the end of June, and in October the record mark set in 2015 was surpassed. 29,450 new motorcycles put into circulation at the end of the year meant a new all-time record.
Last chance to buy a big bike
Not only motorcycle sales but also scooter sales performed well in 2020, with 18,129 sales, an 11.2 percent increase in market volume. The total market for motorcycles and scooters was 49,783 units.
Two main reasons are responsible for the two-wheeler boom. Firstly, the direct access to large motorcycles, which will be abolished at the end of 2020. 2020 was the last year in which people over 25 were allowed to get directly onto a motorcycle with unlimited power. Many took advantage of this last opportunity, ordered the "A unrestricted" learner's permit and bought a large motorcycle.
It is a question of moving away from public transport and towards private transport.
On the other hand, the Corona-related trend "away from public transport, towards private transport" plays an important role. The attractiveness and acceptance of motorcycles and scooters increased significantly in view of the difficult health and economic situation. Motto: "Better a helmet on the head than a mask on the face".
