Two hill climbs in Hemberg 2018
HEMBERG MOUNTAIN RACES In June 2018, there will be two mountain races in Hemberg: one for automobiles as the first round of the Mountain Championship and one for supermotos without championship status. There will be no supporting program for this. Last year, the Toggenburg event unfortunately made negative headlines. Last year, the people of Toggenburg were unfortunate enough to make negative headlines. The stupid accident of a British TV presenter during demonstration drives with an electric sports car caused a worldwide echo in the media. The FIA also subsequently called for an investigation, which led to punishments and fines on the part of Auto Sport Schweiz.
The organizers needed several weeks afterwards to gather themselves and to think about the future. Now the result is available.
The OC decided unanimously to continue their race. The many positive feedbacks from different sides now even move the association to a premiere. On the same track, on June 9/10, 2018, the first round of the Swiss Hillclimb Championship will be held under the mantle of Auto Sport Switzerland on the one hand, and the first Supermoto Hillclimb under the supervision of the Motorcycle Association SAM on the other.
The Supermotos replace the previous supporting program with show block and aerobatic relays. Only licensed racers in various motorcycle racing classes such as Supermoto, Pocketbike, Pitbike, Racequads, etc. are admitted.
The highlight: they will not start individually and one after the other, but in fours, as in ski cross. The race concept and further details are currently being worked out by the experts.
In the seventh year of the new edition, the organizers want to go back to the roots: to motorsport. However, on the second weekend of June 2018, they will be competing with two other motorsport events in Switzerland: Formula E in Zurich and the Lenzerheide Motor Classics. In Zurich, however, much is still unclear, so that the staging of the first circuit race in Switzerland since 1955 is by no means assured.
OC President Christian Schmid is relaxed about this clash of dates:
Christian Schmid: "That's bad luck for them if everyone comes to the Hemberg... The real fans are more likely to come to us. The Supermotos are an experiment. It will only be an experimental race with about 40 riders, which will not require a large time window the car races. We want to try something to appeal to a new audience. On Sunday evening we will all be smarter..."
