Williams has traditionally developed its own transmissions and hydraulic components. The expanded partnership will enable the team to introduce a more efficient design and production process internally in the long term.
This will allow Williams to focus its resources more efficiently in other performance areas. Williams will continue to design and manufacture other chassis parts itself.
Supply for another team makes sense
Toto Wolff, Managing Director and Team Principal of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team: "We are delighted to be able to expand our technical cooperation with Williams with this new agreement. Williams has been using our power units since the 2014 season, so it makes sense for them to acquire the integrated powertrain. At the same time, given the economies of scale, it makes sense for our team to supply another team under the new regulations."
Agreement with Mercedes a positive step
Simon Roberts, Team Principal, Williams Racing: "Williams is an independent team, but Formula 1 is constantly evolving and as a team we need to be agile to respond to the current environment. This is the only way we can put the team in the best possible position to be competitive on the race track. This long-term agreement with Mercedes is a positive step and represents part of our strategic goals for the future. At the same time, we will continue to maintain our own design and manufacturing capabilities."
