Weekend tip: Kerenzerberg race
WITH PETER SAUBER IN THE C3 The second Kerenzerberg race of the modern era will take place this weekend. However, the race will no longer be timed, as was the case at the first revival in 2015. Among the most prominent participants are Peter Sauber and Fredy Lienhard. After some ACS section events, the Kerenzerberg race counted as part of the Swiss championship from 1968 to 1970. After a few ACS section events, the Kerenzerberg race counted as part of the Swiss championship from 1968 to 1970. Drivers from all over Switzerland came to Glarnerland. Silvio Moser on the Bellasi F1 went down in the annals as the last winner of the day.
At the end of May 2015, a revival for historic series and racing vehicles took place at Kerenzerberg. Following the example of Arosa Classic Car, in addition to demonstration drives and a regularity test, there was even a group for pure sports cars, which drove for best time.
Exhibition instead of race
The second new edition of the coming weekend, June 2/3, 2018, is called Kerenzerbergrennen as in the old days. However, there will no longer be a stopwatch. This relieves the organization of many requirements, but does not detract from the quality of the event.
Although it is only an exhibition race, the spectators can look forward to an attractive starting field. More than 220 touring cars, sports and racing cars as well as motorcycles from the pre- and post-war period are divided into ten racing fields. Many have made history in original or type.
One-time comeback of Peter Sauber
Some drivers have illustrious names, first and foremost Peter Sauber. He was already on the grid in 1970 with a Sauber C1. After the end of the 1974 season, Sauber hung up his helmet and has never worn it since.
Months ago, the future Zurich Formula 1 designer spontaneously agreed to take part, but left it open for a long time with which vehicle - it's a Sauber C3. After test drives, which were kept secret, Sauber decided in favor of it.
Fredy Lienhard in the Ferrari 333SP
Spectators at the revival have already seen the yellow 1600 sports car from autobau Romanshorn in action three years ago at Kerenzerberg, at that time with the author of this article at the wheel.
He is all the more flattered that Peter Sauber himself will be his successor - we wish him an equally good (demonstration) ride...
autobau owner Fredy Lienhard brings the fastest and most sonorous racing car to Glarnerland. The winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona 2002 drives a Ferrari 333SP, an open sports car that was successful worldwide some 20 years ago.
His son Fredy Alexander, who has been in charge of autobau since January 2018, drives a Porsche 917 K Recreation, a faithful replica of the legendary sports prototype from 1970/71.
A lot of information on the homepage
The start is true to the original at the Waid Restaurant in Mollis. On a track length of 3.17 km with four hairpin turns as well as fast passages with sweeping curves, the race track goes to the hamlet of Fohrenwald.
The racing vehicles then continue to Bremboden, Filzbach. At this point the vehicles turn around and take the route back to Mollis in groups.
An impression of the track and the event from 2015 is given by this video:
The complete start list and schedule can be found on the informative and richly illustrated event homepage.
Also special tips for the journey by car or train to Näfels/Mollis and the way to the spectator areas will be given there.
