The company, which has been present in Cologne since 1979, was originally called Andersson Motorsport GmbH in honor of its founder Ove Andersson. With the complete takeover by Toyota Motor Corporation in 1993, the company was renamed Toyota Motorsport GmbH. Among other things, TMG was in charge of the Formula 1 commitment and the LMP1 entries in endurance races.
Central hub for Toyota Motorsport
The new Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe GmbH continues to be responsible for participation in the WEC. It is set to win the title again in 2020. It also continues to look after the engine for the Yaris WRC in the World Rally Championship and the customer motorsport project GR Supra GT4. The company thus remains the central hub for Toyota's motorsport activities in Europe.
Also high performance vehicles for the road
The site in the Marsdorf district of Cologne forms the research and development center within the Gazoo Racing Company. This is the independent division of the Toyota Motor Corporation that is responsible for both motorsport and high-performance road vehicles. Its development is now to be strengthened even further. The latest example is the Toyota GR Yaris.
Akio Toyoda, President Toyota Motor Corporation: "When participating in motorsport, where different manufacturers duel, it is always about winning. Therefore, TGR Europe must unite a team of professionals who create winners. To keep winning, we have to practice kaizen (continuous improvement, ed.) and make everything better and better, no matter what the circumstances. Our team will continue to make better and better cars here in Cologne to win."
