The Mazda3 TCR was developed by Long Road Racing in the USA in close cooperation with Mazda Design Americas. The company is already responsible for the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup.
It is no coincidence that the impetus for development came from the USA. Mazda Motorsports has been involved in the IMSA sports car championship with Mazda Team Joest since 2018. The German team, which previously had a long association with Audi, really got the Mazda DPi up and running and won three times in the 2019 season against tough competition from Cadillac, Acura and Nissan.
Design language is retained
In the Mazda design studios, hundreds of hours were invested in the development of the aerodynamics, which should comply with all aspects of the globally valid TCR regulations. In doing so, they adhered to the philosophy of Kodo design ("Soul of Motion"), which embodies the Japanese aesthetic in all new Mazda models of recent years.
The front-wheel drive required in the TCR is provided by a specially developed two-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, which according to the regulations produces 350 hp. The power is transmitted to the front axle via a six-speed gearbox with paddle shifters.
Premiere in January 2020
The race debut will take place on January 26, 2020 at the opening round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge as part of the 24 Hours of Daytona. Following homologation, the Mazda3 TCR can be entered by customer teams in all TCR-sanctioned racing series around the world (according to Mazda, there are currently 36).
