Supercup: Fach in the hunt for the title in Mexico
FINAL RUNS It's not just Formula 1 that is entering its decisive phase. The final two races of the Porsche Supercup will be held this weekend as part of the Mexican GP. Fach Auto Tech is lurking in second place in the drivers' standings with Nick Yelloly. Next Sunday, the Mexican GP will be the third last Formula 1 race of the season that is coming to an end [...]
Next Sunday, the Mexican GP will be the third-last Formula 1 race of the season. At the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, however, the fastest Porsche drivers in Europe will be competing for points for the last time in two rounds.
Only five points apart
For Fach Auto Tech from Sattel, Mexico will even be the most important event of the year. Nick Yelloly has traveled to the North American continent in second place in the overall standings and therefore still has the best chances of winning the title.
The Briton retained this despite only finishing 5th and 4th after the summer break at Spa and Monza.
Team boss Alex Fach: "We're not really satisfied with that. Anyone who knows us knows that. However, in this hot phase of the championship it was important to take every point. Afterwards, it was a matter of preparing ourselves perfectly for the final spurt."
The 27-year-old Briton will fight it out for the title with Michael Ammermüller (D) and Thomas Preining (A), both driving for Lechner Racing. There are still 40 points up for grabs in the two half-hour races. Ammermüller leads the standings with a five-point advantage over Yelloly and 14 points over the official Porsche Junior Preining.
Good memories of 2017
As defending champion, Ammermüller only won the opening race in Barcelona, while Yelloly won two races. The German finished on the podium more often and has the outcome in his own hands.
If the 32-year-old finishes ahead of his rivals, he is the champion. The fact that the former Formula Renault driver at Jenzer Motorsport was in the same position a year ago speaks in his favor.
Alex Fach, however, also has the best memories of the trip to Mexico. Last year's spearhead Matt Campbell won both finals in 2017.
So the Swiss know how to optimally tune the 485-hp Porsche GT3 for this GP circuit.
Rifleman
The second Fach man, Jaap van Lagen, in seventh place in the interim standings, can no longer intervene in the title fight, but can provide valuable shooting assistance to his teammate Yelloly. The young Canadian Roman de Angelis will be the third driver on a Fach Porsche for the first time.
Eurosport will broadcast the first race live on Saturday from 21:45 and on Sunday from 17:15.
