Second around 50-minute race for the Lamborghini Super Trofeo on Saturday morning before the 24 Hours of Spa. Eight minutes before the scheduled finish, a devastating accident occurs at one of the fastest points of the Ardennes Circuit.
Anyone who saw him on the TV monitor was left breathless. One had to fear the worst.
Duel with devastating consequences
Sweden's Fredrik Blomqvest and Switzerland's Lucas Mauron fought a fierce duel for the lead in this giant field of 44 equally matched Huracans. As they slalomed around several competitors to be lapped, the two cars collided sideways.
The following short video sequence shows the accident and how it happened:
Blomqvest immediately turned sideways and crashed head-on into the guardrails, which were at an angle to the road and protected by tire stacks, at 170 km/h - as the read-out data showed.
The marshals behind tried to get to safety immediately, but one of the four was injured, as was the pilot, and was subsequently taken to hospital.
Fortunately, the all-clear was soon given that no one's life was in danger.
No recriminations
The Lamborghini of the 20-year-old from St. Gallen just got a little off track and therefore remained unharmed. Of course, Mauron had to report to the stewards after the stop and describe the accident from his point of view.

In the end, everyone came to the conclusion that it was a "normal", albeit very unfortunate, racing accident with no recriminations or subsequent punishments.
As is usual in the case of race retirements, the classification was valid on the lap before the accident. Thus, Blomqvest and the fast former Super Trofeo champion Patrik Kujala from Finland won.
With a gap of 1.8 seconds, Lucas Mauron and Luca Rettenbacher, who had qualified the car for second place on the grid, finished second overall.

First podium since the 2017 World Final victory
It was the first podium of the season for the Swiss-Brazilian, who has been part of the Lamborghini Junior squad since 2017. In November 2017, Mauron took a class win at the world finale in Imola. At the time, however, he was still racing in Pro-Am, but has since moved up to the top Pro class.
Lucas Mauron: "I'm sorry about what happened and I'm glad it didn't turn out worse. Without this accident, it could well have been enough for us to win. But even so, this is a first nice success for our new team MSG Motorsport. I'm confident that we'll be able to keep up this pace at the final race in September at the Nürburgring, after things hadn't gone particularly well until Spa."
