Chamblon slalom: MOB dethrones MB
DONE Martin Oliver Bürki is the new Swiss Slalom Champion. In a thrilling final in Chamblon, he dethroned namesake and serial champion Martin Bürki. The day's victory went to Philip Egli for the 48th time.
The two Bürkis, who are neither related nor in-laws, have scored the maximum points in all six rounds this season. Therefore, the number of defeated opponents in their respective class or division was decisive - and there it was a draw before the final. The number of competitors in Chamblon was the deciding factor. And here, the new champion Martin Oliver Bürki had the better cards.
The Amsoldinger managed to mobilize more competitors than Bürki. But that alone almost wasn't enough in the end. MOB, as he is known in the paddock, was, contrary to expectations, only second in his class after the first round. The driver of the BMW E33 was a full second behind brand colleague Kevin Metroz from Liddes (VS).
Martin Bürki after the final of the Swiss Slalom Championship in Chamblon (VD): "Of course I would have liked to win the tenth title. But I don't begrudge my namesake this success. It was a great and exciting season and for me it's right the way it is."
Day win again for Philip Egli
Philip Egli's 48th win of the day (!) was almost lost in the exciting battle for the championship. The Glarner, who lives in Zurich, was successful on his paradise course for the eighth time. His fiercest opponent Lukas Eugster waved him off even before the start. And so it came to pass. Egli distanced Eugster, who was fighting bravely with blisters on his hands, by almost five seconds. At the finish line there was a warm embrace and a "thank you" for a varied season with exciting duels. Victor Darbellay followed in Chamblon in third place. The 27-year-old from Valais seized the opportunity and claimed his first podium finish in the Swiss championship.
Christian Bralla fastest touring car driver
Joffrey Salomon (Formula Jedi), Stéphane Maréchal (Renault 2.0), Anthony Gurba and Samuel Métroz (both Formula Arcobaleno) followed in the other ranks. Fastest touring car driver was once again Christian Bralla. A strong first run in 3:11.9 min was enough for the touring car best time for the man from Ticino. In the second run, he discovered an oil leak shortly before the start, which prevented him from taking part in the second race.
Second place in the touring cars went to the second Fiat X1/9 in the field: Christian Darani. Third fastest driver was Stephan Burri in his VW Scirocco. The latter was very happy for the new champion, but at the same time annoyed with himself. If Burri had been a bit brisker in the first run in Ambri and had won his class there instead of finishing second, he would have won the slalom title. In the event of a tie, Burri would have defeated more opponents than the two Bürkis together!
Arnaud Donzé car on fire
The other class winners in Chamblon include: Christophe Oulevay (IS up to 1600 cm3), Christoph Zwahlen (IS plus 2500 cm3), Hans Wüthrich (E1 up to 1400 cm3), René Aeberhardt (E1 2001 up to 2500 cm3), Tobias Meier (E1 up to 3001 up to 3500 cm3), Fabrice Winiger (E1 plus 3500 cm3).
Arnaud Donzé was lucky. Fire broke out in the interior of the VW Golf of the Interswiss driver after crossing the finish line in the second run. Donzé was not injured. The fire could be extinguished. For the driver from the Jura, the season ended with third place in the class behind the winner Burri and Jürg Ochsner.
Sandro Fehr won the title
The duel in the Suzuki Swiss Racing Cup between Sandro Fehr and Marcel Muzzarelli was also exciting. The starting position before the seventh race of the popular one-make cup was clear: If Fehr wins, he is the champion. If Muzzarelli wins, he can put on the crown. After the first race, Muzzarelli was ahead. But Fehr turned the tables again and in 3:38.338 minutes not only secured victory in Chamblon but also the title.
