Swiss Sport: Two victories at once for Marcel Wolf
In changeable weather, Marcel Wolf won the first two races of the 2016 Renault Classic Cup at Hockenheim, with champion Thomas Zürcher bringing home a second place. The Renault Classic Cup kicked off its 2016 racing season with two rounds as part of a major German grassroots event. Since it is not possible to form a separate field with 13 cars, the Swiss were allowed to compete in the DMV-GTC, which is dominated by GT3 sports cars. While it was still dry in practice on Friday, they had to complete their two half-hour races on Saturday on a wet track.
Not unexpectedly, defending champion Thomas Zürcher in the Clio III RS captured the best starting position both times - but the wins were taken in each case by Marcel Wolf in the older Clio Cup II. In the first race, Thomas Zürcher collided with a BMW on the first lap, resulting in a broken steering knuckle on his champion car. Marcel Wolf then won by 8 seconds ahead of his son Denis. At the first start with a Clio III RS bought from Italy and rebuilt at home in the garage in Heimberg, the junior did well in the wet.
Disadvantage on wet track for veteran Marcel Wolf
In the second race, Zürcher led Marcel Wolf until the penultimate lap before the latter bit. "I made Thomas nervous and set him up to outbrake him by hook or by crook," said the 55-year-old garage owner afterwards, pleased with the successful maneuver. However, he admitted that in the wet he no longer had the disadvantage of the weakening 15-inch tires and brakes compared to the newer, but 150 kilogram heavier cars. Daniel Borer, who also returned to the Cup with a Clio III RS, finished third both times and is second in the championship after the first race weekend behind Marcel Wolf and ahead of his son Denis.
