Since 2018, little Switzerland has been getting a little more attention as a host country for major international automobile races with an FIA predicate. The biggest event next year will again be the Swiss Formula E race.
Round eleven of the FIA Formula E Championship
With the move from Zurich to Bern, global attention is unlikely to be any less. June 22 has been confirmed as the date for the Swiss E-Prix, subject to track approval from the FIA.
The race through Bern's Obstberg district past the Bärengraben counts as the eleventh round of the FIA Formula E Championship. A small side note: Formula E still does not have official World Championship status, but it is equivalent to a world championship.
After Bern, only the finale with two rounds in New York (July 13/14) remains on the schedule. The start of the fifth year-long season is on December 15, 2018, in Ad Diriyah just outside the gates of Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh. The following short video provides a foretaste:
Rally du Valais with triple European final run
Until the premiere of Formula E, the Rallye International du Valais (RIV) was Switzerland's biggest motor sport event. In 2019, the RIV (formerly Rallye du Vin), which is being held for the 60th time, will be the finale of all the rounds of the European Rally Trophy for the first time from October 16 to 19. This includes a total of 33 races in the regional zones Alpine, Balkan, Baltic, Benelux, Celtic (Great Britain and Ireland) and Iberia.
The FIA European Alpine Rally Trophy comprises the three rounds of Sanremo (I), Ain Jura (F) and, as the final event, the Rally du Chablais from May 30 to June 1. In Vaud, points are also at stake for the FIA E-Rally Regularity. This championship consists of 13 regularity tests in twelve different European countries.
The grand finale in Valais also counts as the last race for the FIA R-GT Cup and the Tour European Rally (TER). Whether all these predicates will attract more international teams to the start of the anniversary event remains to be seen.
Only fully international hill climb
The oldest Swiss race with FIA status is St. Ursanne-Les Rangiers. Always Switzerland's best-attended mountain race, it counts as the tenth round of the European Mountain Championship on August 18/19.
The importance of the above-mentioned races in Bern, Valais, Vaud and Jura can also be seen in the National Automobile Sports Calendar of Auto Sport Switzerland (ASS) by the I+ status (so-called full I-National events).
On December 5, these dates were definitively approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council at its meeting in St. Petersburg (Russia).
