The new Sauber car is based on three key factors: different conception in aerodynamics, adjustments and changes in the structure of the powertrain and reduction of the overall weight. Mark Smith, Technical Director of the Sauber F1 Team, explained, "We took a slightly different approach to the development of the Sauber C35-Ferrari this time. We changed our philosophy in terms of how we wanted to develop the car aerodynamically. That doesn't sound like much at first, but the impact on the car's development is significant. You can see from the new Sauber car that it represents an evolution."
Points are the goal
Accordingly, the team's objective is: "We want to improve significantly. Of course, we want to achieve a certain ranking. But first of all, it's important to establish ourselves in the midfield. Only then will we focus on individual placings," said Monisha Kaltenborn, Team Principal.
Driver Marcus Ericsson is already getting more specific, with his goal being to score points. "I'm convinced that we're taking a step forward with the new car to be able to finish in the points more consistently and under our own steam. I would be happy if we can race for points this season at a level where lap time is crucial. I know that everyone at the Hinwil plant is working very hard in this direction," said the Swede.
Experience advantageous
Teammate Felipe Nasr also recognizes progress, but still doesn't dare make any predictions. "Not only we, but also our competitors will be bringing innovations to the starting line, the efficiency of which has yet to be seen. Under these conditions, it's almost impossible to make any predictions," said Nasr, going on to explain, "The entire team has been working very hard to identify the areas in the car that we can improve. That's why I'm confident that we've managed to make progress. Where we can place ourselves with this will be shown by the season."
Nasr and Ericsson staying with Sauber is a big plus for the Brazilian: "It's an advantage when a well-rehearsed driver duo can stay for another season. They know each other. That makes certain things easier, and you can improve your work more quickly and reach your goal faster. We will continue to do that in 2016."
