To his own surprise, Eric Berguerand received his Formula 3000 engine back from tuner Dupasqiuer faster than expected and now in working order.
Speaking to AutoSprintCH on Tuesday, the five-time mountain champion doubted that there would be enough time to investigate the cause, repair and re-install the AC-Cosworth power unit into the Lola-FA99 chassis before Sunday's second SM round.
Now the Valais native has won his first race this year against the clock after all. Since the ACS Reitnau hill climb is a one-day event, Berguerand does not have to arrive until Saturday. So theoretically nothing stands in the way of his first start of the season on the course on which he holds the record.
Vice President Thomas Kohler of the organizing ACS Mitte is also pleased about this.
Thomas Kohler: "It's nice that our viewers don't have to do without Eric Berguerand after all. He informed us on Friday evening that it will work out with his participation after all."
Marcel Steiner will also be pleased about this. The defending champion is therefore no longer the lone favorite as he was at the start of the season in Hemberg.
This healthy rivalry between the Bernese and the Walliser could well lead to a new track record on Sunday afternoon in one of the three races.
