More than 80,000 spectators attended the American Speedfest at Brands Hatch - and they witnessed Giorgio Maggi in excellent form once again. In the top qualifying session for the fastest twelve Euro-NASCAR V8 touring cars from practice, the rookie from Hergiswil took third place on the grid for the first Elite 2 race. In the battle for the lead, as the highlights show, Maggi touched pole setter Andre Castro from the USA so unfortunately that the latter spun and the Swiss subsequently received a time penalty.
Podium at each event
Although Maggi only managed twelfth place, his second-fastest race lap secured him a front-row starting spot for the second race over 30 laps on the 1940-meter Indy Circuit. After another fierce duel among the 26 drivers, Maggi finished third in the slipstream of the two leaders.
As a result, he was on the podium in every event, as he was in the opener in Spain (victory) and then in Italy (3rd). With these points, he defended his lead in the standings in the Elite 2 Euro NASCAR Whelen Series for Gentleman Drivers and Rookies.
Giorgio Maggi: "It was a tough two races. It's so difficult to hold your own in the leading group at Brands Hatch or to make up for lost positions! But again it was great fun. I'm happy to continue leading the championship."
The next appearance of this popular racing series will take place in Eastern Europe for the first time at the end of June, at the Autodrom Most in the Czech Republic.
"Maggi Magic" receives celebrity support
For the Dutch Hendriks team, Giorgio Maggi has become a guarantee for success. For this reason, Toine Hezemans, living racing legend and father of Loris Hezemans, who always takes over the Ford Mustang in the Elite 1 race, acts as mentor to the Swiss driver.
Toine Hezemans: "Giorgio did a huge job here, I've never seen him fight so hard. It took a lot of nerves. I will do everything for him to give him a chance to win the championship."
