Motorsport: Two victories of justice

It is rare for disqualifications to be reversed once they have been imposed. Alex Fach was convinced from the outset that the disqualification of his driver Matteo Cairoli on July 3 during the Austrian GP was unjustified. At the subsequent inspection, Fach Auto Tech's fourth-placed Porsche 991 GT3 Cup allegedly weighed too few kilos. The Schwyz team boss immediately lodged an objection. "We were lighter than we wanted to be, but I knew that it would still have been enough. Because the new TCs had measured incorrectly in the Supercup and there were errors in form, I was confident that we would get through," says Fach, breathing a sigh of relief. Last Tuesday he was proved right and Cairoli was given back the 14 points for fourth place in Spielberg.
A few days later, things also went almost perfectly in Hockenheim. In qualifying, the Porsche works junior from Como was unlucky that his last lap was wiped out by a red flag (aborted) after two absolute sector best times. With his previous time, the 20-year-old still qualified for second place on the grid. In the race before the German GP, Cairoli catapulted straight to the front, forcing pole setter Sven Müller into the asphalt run-off zone in the first corner. However, the German regained the lead over the Fach-Porsche with undiminished momentum and remained just ahead of Cairoli until the chequered flag fell after 14 laps. However, because Müller had gained an advantage in the first corner, he subsequently received a time penalty of one second, which relegated him behind the new winner Matteo Cairoli. With his third win of the season and the points from Spielberg, the specialist driver is now only two points behind Müller.
Philipp Frommenwiler also added to his tally in ninth place. Had the driver from Thurgau not made a slight mistake at the start, which caused him to drop back from seventh to tenth place, his strong performance would have been better rewarded. "That was one of the best races Philipp has ever delivered," the team boss praised him.
Jeffrey Schmidt moves up to third place in the table
The second Supercup winner from Switzerland, Jeffrey Schmidt, also made a positive impression. Even though the Basel native would have liked to celebrate his first Supercup triumph at his home track, he was satisfied with third place. This was his sixth Hockenheim podium in a row, having previously won twice in the Carrera Cup Germany at the Badisches Motodrom and clinched three other podium finishes. Schmidt has moved up from fifth to third place in the championship ahead of the four-week summer break.
