Motorsport: Yves Meyer learned his first lessons

Lucerne-based Yves Meyer contested the very first sprint races of his career in the Audi Sport TT Cup at Hockenheim. The career changer's only racing experience to date consisted of Time Attack events. Lucerne duo: Franz Hunkeler, who raced in Group C with Brun Motorsport in the 1980s, is mentoring Yves Meyer as he enters the world of motor racing.

Yves Meyer is the son of Hans Schori, who won the touring car mountain championship in 2011 with the Mitsubishi mountain monster. The 25-year-old from Lucerne works as an instructor at the Event Center Seelisberg, which his father has developed into a popular meeting place for sporty drivers. The junior has earned international laurels as a multiple champion in the Swiss and European Time Attack Challenge with a Nissan GT3. Here, it's all about the best time to be achieved in a single lap.

In circuit races, such a hot lap is important in qualifying, after which it's all about position battles. "I don't have to prove anything," he said, taking the pressure off himself before the Audi Sport TT Cup debut. "Anyone I leave behind is good for me." From that perspective, he could have been quite satisfied with grid positions 16 and 14 among 20 competitors. But in the first race, a mistake happened to him during an irritating safety car phase that was first lifted and then continued after all. Because Meyer drove into the car of a car in front in a chain reaction, he had to start the second race from the pits as a penalty.

The constant increase was the goal
With cold tires, Yves rushed after the field and managed to overtake two opponents before the finish. Afterwards, however, he was much more interested in the lap times than the placings. "I started at 1'53.5 in free practice and finished at 1'51.8 in the second race, which would have put me just inside the top ten in qualifying. This constant improvement was my goal, and I'm building on it after my first race experience. At the second Hockenheim event in October I will certainly stand further."
