PCC: Few but strong opponents for Jeffrey Schmidt
The Porsche Carrera Cup Germany is experiencing a brutal decline in participants in 2016. However, this does not make the task any easier for title favorite Jeffrey Schmidt. Only 13 drivers have so far registered for the 2016 German Carrera Cup, which starts next weekend in Oschersleben as part of the ADAC GT Masters. All other races will then take place in the [...]
All further races will then take place in the DTM supporting program, which could slightly increase the number of participants. After years of dominance, Porsche Motorsport is now apparently feeling the effects of booming competition from various GT3 racing series and cheaper one-make cups. Nevertheless, the standard in the oldest German Cup (since 1990) remains extremely high. For Jeffrey Schmidt, the only Swiss driver in the field, the starting position therefore remains unchanged: "The best teams are there with top drivers, so even with only a dozen opponents, nothing is given to you." With his outstanding performance at the final race in Hockenheim in October 2015, he showed that he is ready to take on the role of favorite in the newly formed Lechner Huber Racing team.
Oris as new sponsor and Tele Basel as partner
Since then, the Basel native has won the year-round GT3 Cup Challenge in the Middle East in equally convincing style and, as a bonus, the two Porsche invitational races at the Bahrain GP. He then agreed a double program with Walter Lechner Racing, which means he can now also contest the complete Porsche Supercup as part of Formula 1. After years of effort, the Liestaler was able to gain the watch manufacturer Oris, based in nearby Hölstein, as a new personal sponsor and convince the Swiss broadcaster Tele Basel to broadcast live (from the second race onwards). At the moment, Jeffrey Schmidt is really ticking right.
