As defending champion, Nico Müller will be competing with start number 1 in an Audi R8 LMS from WRT. As last year, his teammates are Laurens Vanthoor (B) and Christopher Mies (D) and, for the first time, Pierre Kaffer from Zurich. Phoenix Racing's victories with the new Audi at the first two VLN rounds give the Bernese driver confidence that he can once again have a say in the overall victory. Of the nearly 40 GT3 cars in the field, a good half are in contention for overall victory. However, in the absence of Marcel Fässler (concentrating on Le Mans) and Rahel Frey, Nico Müller is the only Swiss candidate.
In SP8, two Swiss drivers, Urs Bressan in a Ford Mustang and Christoph Wüest in a Lexus ISF, will compete against each other. In SP6, Hofor Racing with the Kroll family and Roland Eggimann with two BMW M3s are aiming for another class win. With Sandro Rothenberger, Stefan Tribelhorn and Roger Vögeli, three Swiss are represented in three different teams in the Opel Astra OPC Cup class - they are emulating AutoSprintCH editor Peter Wyss, who took his second class win here in 2014 with the Kissling team. Making their debut are Fabian Danz in a VW Golf TCR and long-time Formula 3 driver Yannick Mettler in a BMW M235i Racing Cup. Both are also contesting the VLN Championship.
Entire 24-hour race live on RTL Nitro
In the preliminary program, the World Touring Car Championship and the European Cup will compete in a field with separate starts on the Nordschleife. After the ETCC double victory of Kris Richard and Peter Rikli in the two new Honda Civic TCRs at the Slovakia Ring, the starting position is clear for Peter Rikli: "Of all the drivers with TCR cars, I bring the most experience to the Nordschleife. That's why I definitely want to take my chance and win here." The Audi Sport TT Cup with Yves Meyer and Philip Ellis holds its two rounds on the GP circuit. RTL Nitro will broadcast the complete 24-hour race live from 3 p.m. on Saturday. Also on free TV, the TT Cup can be seen on Sport1 on Friday at 7 p.m. and the WTCC on Saturday from 11:15 a.m. on Eurosport1.
