Motorsport: Sauber's new hope

The Brazilian GP will be Sauber's second-last chance to score its first points of the Formula 1 season. German Jörg Zander, who lives in the canton of St. Gallen, will return to the Hinwil-based team as Technical Director in 2017. Back in his adopted home: Following Audi's withdrawal from LMP1, Jörg Zander has found a new role with his former employer Sauber.

It would be the second piece of good news this week if Marcus Ericsson or Felipe Nasr finally managed to score one or more points in Interlagos on Sunday (live on SRF Info from 16:30). The Swede came close in eleventh place last time out in Mexico. It would also be time for Felipe Nasr to put down an exclamation mark in order to recommend himself for the continuation of his GP career through performance and not just through his dowry. Buoyed by the support of the fans, the home race would be the best opportunity to do so.

The first and best news from the Sauber camp since the announcement of the new ownership structure in the summer is the appointment of Jörg Zander as Technical Director. The German, who has lived in Jona SG for many years, knows the Hinwil-based racing team from 2006 and 2007, when he worked for the BMW Sauber team as Chief Designer. Prior to that, the 52-year-old worked in similar roles at BAR-Honda and Williams. Jörg Zander has worked at Audi Sport since 2010, most recently as the person with overall responsibility for the technology of all Ingolstadt racing cars. The aerodynamically successful Audi R18, which was the fastest car in some of the 2016 World Endurance Championship races, bears his signature.

Back in the points: One of the two Sauber drivers would only have to leave one more competitor behind in Brazil than in Mexico for a points finish to become a reality this season.

Jörg Zander wants to set an example in Hinwil
The Swiss driver of choice will not be able to work miracles in the short term, as the cars designed in accordance with the new regulations for 2017 are well advanced. However, Jörg Zander will certainly exert his influence on further development and incorporate new ideas into the design of the C37 for 2018. He himself is looking forward to this challenge: "The new regulations offer a great opportunity to make a mark with innovations and technical creativity. We naturally want to improve and initially establish ourselves in the midfield." The Swiss and global Sauber fans will have him and his team to thank for this.
