Motorsport: Sauber plans Formula E team!

AutoSprintCH has learned from a well-informed source that the Sauber F1 Team is secretly planning to enter the FIA Formula E! The aim is to bring the Hinwil-based team back into the headlines in a more positive light, as there are no signs of sporting and economic success in Formula 1 in the foreseeable future. Considerations have been underway since the [...]

The idea has been under consideration since the announcement of the new electric racing car championship. For Sauber, Sam Bird's triumph in Argentina in February tipped the scales in favor of a Formula E project. There, the Briton brought the DS Virgin Racing team, which was founded in June 2015, its first victory, which is associated with a great deal of prestige for Citroën's premium brand. A few years ago, Virgin Racing was no real competition for Sauber in Formula 1. As a result, Sauber's team management has now put out feelers for a manufacturer as a partner that is genuinely interested in developing electric mobility in order to take on the best in this discipline, which is attracting a lot of goodwill and publicity everywhere.

According to our informant, Sauber also wants to draw attention to the technology site in Hinwil, which has long been used by various customers from the automotive industry (keyword: wind tunnel). In addition, Sauber is apparently hoping to attract new sponsorship partners, especially as an eGrand Prix is planned in Switzerland for 2017. Following the cancellation of Lugano, Zurich is the only candidate and is therefore favored as the venue, where the e-mobil Züri association, supported by the Blick Group in the media, was formed for this purpose in autumn 2015. Julius Baer, a Swiss bank, is the exclusive global partner of FIA Formula E, while TAG Heuer is the official timekeeper. A third globally renowned Swiss company like Sauber would be the best advertisement for FIA Formula E and an eGrand Prix in Zurich. Unfortunately, no one from Sauber could be reached for comment.
