Motorsport: Jeffrey Schmidt wants second title
Two weeks ago, Jeffrey Schmidt secured overall victory in the multi-year Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East at the finale in Bahrain. With the test drives at Oschersleben in view of the German Carrera Cup, the attack on the next championship title begins for the man from Basel this weekend. Germany's most northerly race track will also be the venue for the mid-April [...]
Germany's northernmost race track will also host the season opener in mid-April for the first time as part of the ADAC GT Masters, after which the Carrera Cup will once again start as part of the DTM's supporting program. "The championship went almost perfectly," says the 22-year-old student, looking back on the six events in Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Saudi Arabia.
He won nine of the twelve races. Only at the end did the Liestaler have to admit defeat twice by a narrow margin because the team had fumbled a bit with the tire selection. And at the seventh race on January 29 in Dubai, Schmidt was eliminated by a launch on the starting lap. "The level was certainly not as high as in Europe," the second international Porsche champion from Switzerland (after Alexandre Imperatori in Asia in 2012) is aware, "but you also have to win such a championship first."
Lechner driver is crown favorite for German Cup title in 2016
After his very first title in motor racing, the second is now to follow in the next few months. As the outstanding winner of last year's finale at Hockenheim and dominator in the Middle East, the youngest driver from the Lechner team is considered the crown favorite for the German Cup title in 2016. "This is now my declared goal for the season. I have no plans to continue racing in the Porsche Cup after this. That's why I now want to recommend myself for a GT cockpit, which I then hope I won't have to pay for." For budget reasons, it is not yet clear whether Schmidt will also compete in the Supercup.
