Motorsport: Jeffrey Schmidt sets another record

Jeffrey Schmidt further extended his lead in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East and secured his seventh victory in eight races at the Autodrome Dubai. Jeffrey Schmidt: "Dubai was my team's home race and I'm happy to have been able to give Al Nabooda Racing and all the fans at the track at least one win."

The start to the home race of his Al Nabooda Racing team initially went well. Schmidt set fastest times in both free practice and qualifying and thus started the race from pole position. Despite a commanding start, however, the race was quickly over for the Swiss. Team-mate Zaid Ashkanani spun in turn 1 and also hit the 21-year-old's car.

In the second race, Schmidt again started the race from the front row and took the lead as early as lap two. From that moment on, the 21-year-old pulled away from his pursuers bit by bit and crossed the finish line with a 2.3-second lead - one of the biggest of the season so far. "The second race at the Dubai Autodrome went just perfectly. Now we're back in first place and that's exactly where we belong," beamed Schmidt after his victory.

Seven victories in eight races
With his seventh success in the eighth race of the season, the Swiss set another record. No one except Schmidt and Abdulaziz Al-Faisal has had more victories in the history of the Porsche one-make cup after two-thirds of the season. Schmidt has been leading the championship without interruption since the first race of the season. He leads by 175 points ahead of the final four races. In the team standings, his victory in Dubai helped Al Nabooda Racing extend its lead over second place back to 86 points.

The penultimate round of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East will be held on 19 February 2016 - again at the Dubai Autodrome. There, the Liestaler wants to bring about the preliminary decision in the title race with a double victory in order to celebrate his first championship in the Porsche one-make cup at the season finale on the Formula 1 circuit in Bahrain (04.03. - 05.03.2016).
