Motorsport: Jeffrey Schmidt celebrates double victory
The third stop of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East was the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. It was Jeffrey Schmidt's first time on the legendary Formula 1 race track and he again celebrated a one-two. The two qualifying sessions and the two races that took place on the same day presented a particular challenge. Schmidt didn't let this stop him and undeterred secured first place on the grid for both races. And the 21-year-old successfully defended this position: With good starts and the experience he has gained so far, he kept the competition behind him. He managed six victories in six races. In addition, he equaled the record set by Abdulaziz Al-Faisal in the 2009/10 season, who also won the first six races of the season.
"Winning was the ultimate goal and I'm very happy about my first victories in 2016. Winning is something wonderful. Still, the real thrill of racing is fighting your rivals for every inch. I missed that a bit when I was driving away alone at the front," confessed the Liestaler.
Schmidt's dominant start to the season puts him on course for the title. With the maximum points total of 150, he has a 22-point lead over the runner-up - his teammate Ashkanani. In the team championship, Al Nabooda Racing leads with 278 points.
Schmidt will already be on the grid at the Dubai Autodrome next weekend, January 29-30. His goal for the next race is "to continue to be as consistent and focused."
