Motorsport: Hard bread for Swiss drivers

None of the Swiss drivers made a major breakthrough at the Iame Karting World Final in Le Mans. None of them got through without incident and all of them were stuck in the midfield of the highly competitive classes. Nevertheless, the outcome was positive. Nine Swiss riders traveled to the Iame X30 World Final in Le Mans (F). Swiss champion Norick Lehner (Praga), runner-up Hicham Mazou (Kosmic), SM third-placed Alessandro Felber (Tony Kart) as well as Samuel Weibel (Exprit) and Dario Stanco (Exprit) competed in the X30 Senior class, which had a total of 124 (!) drivers. As many as 129 drivers competed in the junior category, including Swiss Champion Savio Moccia (Praga), Julian Kuwabara-Wagg (Sodi), Elias Wigger (Praga) and Miklas Born (Exprit). Switzerland was also well represented in the organization. ASS employee Roland Sprecher, who is responsible for the Kart-SM, acted as one of the three race directors, Nadja Leibundgut helped with the administration, and there were also two representatives on the jury and in technical control.

More would certainly have been possible for Norick Lehner: The Swiss champion dropped back to 20th place in the scramble at the start and then moved up to P8 with the fastest race lap.

400 riders from 40 nations rolled up to the starting line
Around 400 drivers from more than 40 countries and five continents were represented on the flowing and challenging track on the site of the famous Le Mans car and motorcycle circuit. In seven races per class, the best 34 qualified for the A final, places 35 to 68 for the B final and places 69 to 102 for the C final. The remaining drivers had to pack their bags early.

Among the X30 senior riders, Dario Stanco (6th), Lehner (8th with the fastest race lap), Hicham Mazou (20th) and Samuel Weibel (out) made it to the C final. In the X30 juniors, Julian Kuwabara-Wagg (14th) and Savio Moccia (27th) also qualified for the C final. Although no Swiss made it past the C final, their opinion was unanimous: They all learned a lot during this adventure at the highest level, but were beaten because of time penalties, caroms, defects or their own mistakes. That's just the way a world championship is.
