The Gurnigel Hill Climb Association, with OC President Theo Bertschi and Race Director Peter Flückiger at the helm, has the same worries every year: what will the weather be like in September? Because when the weather is changeable or rainy, there are far fewer spectators than when the weather is fine in late summer. This has an impact on income, and because this is fundamental, such a shortfall puts a strain on the already strained budget.
All club members are now free of this worry. The watch company Graham from La Chaux-de-Fonds has been secured as the main sponsor and presenting partner for five years from 2016. Racing enthusiast and CEO Eric Loth ("I'm from Biel and want to do something for the traditional Bernese race") will not only take over the deficit guarantee, but will also allow the riders to participate in a lavishly filled prize pot. As before, this includes a commemorative prize for everyone, a trophy for one third of each class as well as non-cash and cash prizes for the best of the REG licensed riders on Saturday and the nationals on Sunday.
Valuable watches and cash prizes for the fastest
At the upcoming event on September 10 and 11, the winner of the day will receive a Graham watch worth 10,000 francs. The fastest lady in the overall classification will then be able to strap a 5,000 franc Lady Moon Diamond from Graham to her forearm. Another valuable watch will be raffled off among all riders attending the prize-giving ceremony on Sunday evening. The respective group winners of the SM race will receive cash prizes of 20 francs per participant. Taking the E1 group from 2015 as an example, the group winner would take home around 1800 francs! In addition, all riders who can prove that they are starting at the Gurnigel National Mountain Race for the first time will have their entry fee refunded. Spectators can therefore already look forward to a large field of participants. The best are guaranteed to give their best.
