From now on, BMW Group Motorsport will be responsible for vehicle development and racing. In the coming years, the strong pillars of the program will continue to be the DTM, with a new commitment to the FIA Formula E and the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
The focus on production car racing decided in 2009 will be further intensified. DTM and the IMSA GT Championship in the USA were already part of the program. Participation in the WEC with a new GT car is planned and includes a return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The portfolio in customer sports will be expanded to include the BMW M4 GT4.
Cooperation with Andretti Motorsport in FIA Formula E
BMW is also working closely with the team of US racing legend Michael Andretti in the FIA Formula E Championship, the world's leading racing series for vehicles with electric drives. As a cooperation partner, BMW Motorsport will enter into a close exchange with Andretti in order to become better acquainted with the operations in this innovative series and to examine the possibilities for a factory entry in the future. In addition, MINI's successful cooperation with Team X-raid in the Dakar Rally will be continued.
"This strategic realignment is a strong commitment by our company to motorsport. It will remain an important cornerstone within the BMW Group in the future," emphasizes Klaus Fröhlich, the BMW AG Board of Management member responsible for Development and Motorsport. "Our commitments complement each other perfectly: in sporting competition, we meet our most important competitors worldwide, whether as part of our factory commitments or in customer sport. The future strategy is an excellent fit for the BMW Group."
